Microsoft Releases Free Web Networking Tool: Visual Round Trip Analyzer

Microsoft's Visual Round Trip Analyzer tool helps web developers and testers visualize the download of their page, identify best practices and changes that improve web performance. The network Round-Trip between the client and server(s) is the single biggest impact to web page performance – much greater than server response time. VRTA examines the communications protocol, identifying the causes of excessive round-trips, and recommending solutions. Performance engineers, testers, developers, operations personnel should use VRTA to conduct their web performance analysis.

VRTA sits on top of NetMon 3.2 which is also released publically for free. VRTA abstracts the use of Netmon so the user does not need to know the details of Netmon but can simply click to start/stop the capture. VRTA has three primary features 1) a main chart which displays http traffic in 3 dimensions, 2) an All Files view that shows critical measurements for each file loading, and 3) an Analysis report that indicates which file transfers are exceptions to best practice rules.

Norton Labs Releases Windows Vista User Account Control Tool

Norton's User Account Control Tool has been designed to replace the Vista UAC, to simultaneously make your system more secure while significantly improving user-friendliness.

By default, any application launched by an administrator is running with a filtered, standard user access token. When the administrator attempts to perform a task, the UAC prompts the user to approve the action. This can lead to poor user experiences because the prompts can be slow to display, and appear frequently and without warning. What’s more, because the UAC may give a false sense of security since other processes can still access the desktop, it actually raises security concerns.

The net effect is that many users find the UAC security clearance and prompting process annoying, especially those who are a computer’s only user and have all the latest Norton Internet Security software installed and updated.

The User Account Control tool will collect user input as well as information on applications causing prompts. The data will be processed to improve the comprehensiveness and robustness of the white list, which will be updatable while running the tool online.

    More Sudoku Love from Microsoft

Microsoft employees seem to love Sudoku; they continue to create a number of projects for their beloved game.  Microsoft's latest is from MSDN's Charlie Ellis, who wrote "Building a Basic, Understandable Sudoku Solver Using Excel Iterative Calculation" available as two articles (Part 1 & Part 2).

    Other Microsoft Sudoku Projects:
Microsoft Sudoku: Optimizing UMPC Applications for Touch and Ink - This article closely examines Stephen Toub's Tablet PC-based implementation of Sudoku. It is the same implementation in the Touch Pack, a software package that comes preinstalled on ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs). The article details the algorithmic aspects of implementing a Sudoku game, in addition to the specific details that help you implement other applications designed for Tablet PC and UMPC. (Requires: Tablet PC SDK v 1.7) - Support MSDN Document

Microsoft Releases Updated Process Monitor v2.0

Process Monitor 2.0 is an advanced monitoring tool for Windows that shows real-time file system, Registry and process/thread activity. It combines the features of two legacy Sysinternals utilities, Filemon and Regmon, and adds an extensive list of enhancements including rich and non-destructive filtering, comprehensive event properties such session IDs and user names, reliable process information, full thread stacks with integrated symbol support for each operation, simultaneous logging to a file, and much more. Its uniquely powerful features will make Process Monitor a core utility in your system troubleshooting and malware hunting toolkit.
    What's New in 2.0?:
This major update to Process Monitor adds real-time TCP and UDP monitoring to its existing process, thread, DLL, file system and registry monitoring. You can now see the TCP and UDP activity processes performed, including the operation (e.g. connect, send, receive), local and remote IP addresses and DNS names, and operation transfer lengths. On Windows Vista, Process Monitor also collects thread stacks for network operations. (Thanks Curtis)
