FREE Microsoft Software for the Macintosh
My Mac Buddy Dub el Gee warned this will be my least read blog entry ever! But before any Macintosh users flame me for simply putting “Microsoft & Macintosh” in the same sentence – please first read my opinion. . .
The Macintosh is the best “personal” computer – OK, I said it! But, I also believe that Esperanto is the “ideal” spoken language for the entire world. Just because a technology is “better” does not mean the world will adopt it (i.e. Dvorak Keyboard)
While Mac users argue their computer is more “intuitive” – there’s nothing “intuitive” about any computer. Nature doesn’t give us “intuitions” for when to double-click – it’s still a learned skill. But Macintosh users should understandably be happy with their computer. The hardware is sexy, and their software is powerful & fun to use.
Having worked with many Mac users, I know there are a few that don’t like Microsoft – and some that attempt to never run any Microsoft software at all.
Thankfully, there are some Mac users that still work amongst “us” Windows users – and purchase Office:mac (or Virtual PC) so of course, there are some free (and two cheap) tools to help them too!
Dave Client is an inexpensive 3rd party application allowing your Mac to browse Microsoft networks and mount volumes, as well as share your folders or drives for others to access.
Entourage Signatures and Backgrounds – Add some personality to your business messages with the colorful icons that accompany these signatures and backgrounds.
Exchange Update for Entourage is a powerful e-mail and personal information manager (PIM) that helps you stay in touch with others, manage personal information, and keep track of your schedule. In Entourage X, your e-mail, calendar, address book, and task list are seamlessly integrated in one easy-to-use program. The Exchange Update adds features designed especially for people who work in organizations running Microsoft Exchange Server.
NEW! Flip4Mac - component for QuickTime, allows you to play Windows Media files (.wma and .wmv) directly in QuickTime Player and view Windows Media content on the Internet using a Web browser. (Website - UPDATED! Patch)
NO LONGER AVAILABLE! Internet Explorer No, I’m not saying that Mac users should not use their Safari browser, but there are times when a website is (unfortunately) written for a specific browser.
UPDATED! Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive includes essential tools that can help you transform the way you create, share, and manage ideas and information using all four Office 2004 for Mac programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage. After you install the Test Drive, you can use it for 30 days. (Support Document ReadMe)
The Office Mac Resource Kit provides prescriptive information for administrators and support professionals who deploy, administer, and support Office 2004 for Mac in Microsoft Live Communications Server or Microsoft Exchange Server environments.
PowerPoint 98 Viewer allows people who use Microsoft PowerPoint to share their presentations with users who do not have PowerPoint.
VBA Converter for Excel converts Visual Basic for Applications macros that are opened or saved in Excel 5.0/95 Workbook format.
Windows Media Player for Mac OS X No I’m not saying that Mac users should not use their QuickTime player, but there are times when a website’s stream simply doesn’t work for a specific browser. (It happens to Windows users when “we” need to switch to QuickTime). Soon to be retired -- see Flip4Mac above.
