Microsoft Releases Windows Server 2008 Resources for Free Download

Windows Server 2008 may be new, but Microsoft has already released many free resources!

NOTE 1: These time-limited Release Candidates will expire on June 30, 2008. Afterwards, you'll need to uninstall the software or upgrade to a later released or a fully-licensed version.

GROUP POLICY & SECURITY RESOURCES: 
Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows Server 2008 - This spreadsheet lists the policy settings for computer and user configurations included in the Administrative template files (.admx/.adml) delivered with Windows Server 2008. The policy settings included in this spreadsheet cover Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional, and Windows 2000. You can configure these policy settings when you edit Group Policy objects (GPOs). In addition, this spreadsheet includes the following categories of security policy settings:
 
    • Account Policies (Password Policy, Account Lockout Policy, and Kerberos Policy)
    • Local Policies (Audit Policy, User Rights Assignment, and Security Options)
    • Event Log
    • Restricted Groups
    • System Services
    • Registry
    • File System policy settings
NOTE: This does not include security settings that exist outside of the Security Settings extension (scecli.dll), such as Wireless Network extension, Public Key Policies, or Software Restriction Policies. 
 
Multiple Group Policy Preference Side Extensions have been added to the Windows Server 2008 Group Policy Management Console. Group Policy Preferences enable information technology professionals to configure, deploy, and manage operating system and application settings they previously were not able to manage using Group Policy. After you install these updates, your computer will be able to process the new Group Policy Preference extensions.
 
Starter Group Policy objects (GPOs) are collections of configured Administrative template (.admx) policy settings that you can use to create a live GPO for clients running Windows Vista & Windowws XP SP2 and later.
 
Windows Server 2008 Security Guide - This Solution Accelerator for the Windows Server 2008 Security Guide includes the following components:
 
    • Executive Overview. A summary for business and technical managers that briefly explains how you can use the guidance and the tool for this Solution Accelerator.
    • Security Guide. Recommended guidelines and best practices in a series of chapters that offer detailed guidance on how to harden servers running Windows Server 2008 that handle different workloads, including those for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), DHCP, DNS, Web, File, Print, Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS), Network Policy and Access Services, and Terminal Services.
