Microsoft Begins a New Era of Satellite Communications

The Microsoft Bloggers are all buzzing about their big announcement set for tomorrow April 1. The satellite communications project began years ago, and it appears that Microsoft is now ready to show the rest of the world what they've been working on. (^_^)

It was announced in January 1995 It's the most ambitious project yet of the information age, and people would hoot if it weren't backed by Bill Gates of Microsoft and Craig McCaw of McCaw Cellular. The two billionaires'personal joint venture, the Teledesic Corporation, announced plans last March to blanket Earth with 840 communications satellites far more than the total in orbit today. Teledesic's goal is to bring the information superhighway in all its glory to even the most remote reaches of the globe by the end of the century. "The basic concept is to create a system with the essential characteristics of an optical-fiber-based network," says Russell Daggatt, president of Teledesic, but to provide service to areas that wouldn't be economical to wire."

So let the rumors begin:

Microsoft Releases BSOD Screen Saver

BlueScreen Screen Saver v3.2 One of the most feared colors in the NT world is blue. The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) will pop up on an NT system whenever something has gone terribly wrong. Bluescreen is a screen saver that not only authentically mimics a BSOD, but will simulate startup screens seen during a system boot.

Windows NT 4.0 installations simulates chkdsk of disk drives with errors!
Windows 9x & Windows 2000 computers presents the Windows 2000 startup splash screen, complete with rotating progress band and progress control updates!

Bluescreen cycles between different Blue Screens and simulated boots every 15 seconds or so. Many people know about the trick of typing

=rand()

into Word and having the document filled with the following text:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Well to my surprise during a demonstration it was not the same ol' "quick brown fox" text! Here’s the upgraded =rand() text created in Word 2007

On the Insert tab, the galleries include items that are designed to coordinate with the overall look of your document. You can use these galleries to insert tables, headers, footers, lists, cover pages, and other document building blocks. When you create pictures, charts, or diagrams, they also coordinate with your current document look.

You can easily change the formatting of selected text in the document text by choosing a look for the selected text from the Quick Styles gallery on the Home tab. You can also format text directly by using the other controls on the Home tab. Most controls offer a choice of using the look from the current theme or using a format that you specify directly.

To change the overall look of your document, choose new Theme elements on the Page Layout tab. To change the looks available in the Quick Style gallery, use the Change Current Quick Style Set command. Both the Themes gallery and the Quick Styles gallery provide reset commands so that you can always restore the look of your document to the original contained in your current template.

When Microsoft allows the research engineers to name their own product – we get wonderful names like S.N.A.R.F. and P.H.L.A.T.

So keeping with their poorly named programs theme – Microsoft gives us:

G.L.E.E. (Graph Layout Engine) works on the principles of the Sugiyama scheme of layered layouts; providing visualization of graphs representing state machines, XML schemas, databases, and more. It is a .NET application coming with a ready to use viewer. The application can be used to visualize a Finite State Machine, a flow chart, a control flow graph etc.

The website “YouTube” has posted “Heat Vision and Jack” a 1999 pilot created for Fox. Written by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab, directed by Ben Stiller, this series was passed over by Fox despite critical acclaim from those who've been lucky enough to see it.

The 30 minute pilot is about an astronaut (played by Jack Black) with a medical secret who is on the run from the evil Ron Silver and the rest of NASA, with the help of a talking motorcycle called Heat Vision (voiced by Owen Wilson).

Stupid Microsoft Outlook Tricks

Create a new Sticky Note – from the File pull-down menu, select New followed by Note
Type some quick text in the Sticky Note
Drag the Sticky Note around the screen a few times and/or resize the note's windows' size a few times, then move it around even more.
Now, here’s the trick:

Press <Ctrl> + Z
Amused? Press <Ctrl> + Z to reverse/repeat the process.
