Microsoft Pro Photo Tools provides a set of tools photographers can use to perform various tasks with their images—including RAW captures. With Pro Photo Tools, you can quickly geotag your digital photos and determine location name automatically. You can also view your images on a map, edit and view metadata, and much more using the power of Windows and Microsoft Live Local.

In response to comments and suggestions submitted by many users, Microsoft has updated Pro Photo Tools to run on Vista 64-bit operating systems.

However, since most manufacturer codecs are 32-bit and Pro Photo Tools does not require the additional processing advantages provided by x64 processors, it was updated using the built-in x86 emulator (WOW64) and is offered as a single download that will work on both x84 and x64 systems.

Microsoft Releases Three Updated Foreign Language ClearType Fonts for Windows XP

Some fonts shipped with Windows XP use embedded bitmaps to provide legibility at small sizes on the screen. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) does not display these bitmaps but instead renders the outlines. These outlines are not instructed (hinted) for good legibility and the results are poor. These updated font collections have been properly instructed for legibility at 9 point size and above in ClearType environments such as WPF.

Microsoft Releases "Pro Photo Tool" for Metadata Editing

Pro Photo Tools allow you to add, change, and delete common metadata properties for digital photographs. You can place photos on the Live Earth map and then drag them to the right location. The GPS information will be stored back into the photos. If you have a GPS device, can load track route files from the most popular formats (NMEA, GPX, and KML) and see them on the map. Then you can place your photos on the track route. Again, the GPS info will be stored into your file. When you have the right GPS location for your photos, you can automatically generate location info like country, state, city and even street names. Or if you know the location where a picture was taken, you can type it in and get the GPS location information automatically.

Chris Keroack, Microsoft's Release Manager for Windows XP Service Pack 3 has announced on the TechNet Forums the availablity of Windows XP Service Pack 3 on April 29th.

Nick MacKechnie, Microsoft Senior Technical Account Manager in New Zealand posted THEN removed the following Windows XP SP3 release schedule:

Windows XP Service Pack (SP3) includes all previously released updates for Windows XP, including security updates, out-of-band releases, and hotfixes. It contains a small number of new updates, that can help make it easier for Windows XP customers to be sure their system is up-to-date, but should not significantly change their Windows XP experience. Enhancements to Windows XP SP3 (such as, for example, NAP) will make it easier for corporate customers to co-manage both operating systems within their corporate environments, as customers are gradually moving to Windows Vista via hardware refresh.

Starter Group Policy objects (GPOs) are collections of configured Administrative template (.admx) policy settings that you can use to create a live GPO for clients running Windows Vista & Windowws XP SP2 and later. (Thanks Craig)

Starter GPOs in the Windows Vista package are based on recommended settings for the Specialized Security— Limited Functionality (SSLF) and Enterprise Client (EC) environments, as documented in the Windows Vista Security Guide.

The NT EventLog Explorer tool can be useful for functional and exploratory testing and debugging. The main purpose of this tool is to reduce burden of manual retrieving and creating EventLog related information since all necessary data regarding installed event sources is already on the machine.

The NT EventLog Explorer is designed to help a user in exploring NT Eventlog sources installed on a local machine and design and fire user selected sets of events involving multiple sources with one button click.

The UI enables a user to browse easily thru all sources that are registered under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog and to extrect all event information providing that path to valid message dll is stored under EventMessageFile key. It also retrives event category information if relevant keys CategoryMessageFile and CategoryCount are set.

No .mc files or any support from event source creator is necessary. The user can past selected events into Execution List, change or edit Category, EntryType and insert strings for selected event or group of events and then fire them and store to XML file for future use – for example in automated test environment. The tool has potential to save a lot of time and effort by providing a user with more sophisticated selection options implemented in context menus; including SQL WHERE statements. This is especially beneficial for large event sources like e.g. MSSQLServer that has 7700 events;
